Shopping

Arndale   Euston Rd   New Town Square
Queen St   Pedder St   Anderton St   Nelson St

Arndale Shopping Centre
Market Street entrance to the Morecambe Arndale Shopping Centre.

The Arndale first opened in 1972, although it's been refurbished internally the layout remains the same.

Before the Arndale the area was covered by lost roads such as Cheapside, Sun Street, Anderton Street.

Another casualty being the Royalty Theatre which sat next to what is now Barclays Bank on Market Street. The centre's access road now covers the site.

It was in a house on Cheapside, next to the Royalty Theatre, the late actress Dame Thora Hird was born.

Morecambe Arndale Centre
Euston Road
Barclay's Bank Building in Morecambe Town Centre.

A popular retail area and also Morecambe's main shopping street.

It is fully pedestrianised from the Promenade to Central Drive and also contains features such as the Arndale Centre and New Town Square.

Retailers include:

Abbey, Barclays Bank, Ethel Austin, Greenwoods, Home Bargains, Holland & Barret, H Samuel, Peacocks, Specsavers, Superciggs, Wetherspoons.

New Town Square

New Town Square lies in the middle of the pedestrianised area of Euston Road.  It contains one entrance to the large Arndale Centre, a mosaic of Morecambe's Coat-Of-Arms and a selection of retailers.

In the middle sits a sloping mosaic which bares the Coat-Of-Arms of the former Borough of Morecambe & Heysham.  The towns motto reads: 'Beauty Surrounds Health Abounds'

Considering the close proximity of the Lake District and the wonderful views of the Lakeland Hills across the bay the motto certainly has some truth in it.

Anderton Street
Anderton Court, Morecambe.

Anderton Street sits near the heart of Morecambe Town Centre and connects New Town square with Pedder Street.

Queen Street

One of the oldest thoroughfares in Morecambe this route departs from the usual grid-like streets of the town centres.

It used to run from the heart of old Poulton village to the promenade.  It now links the prom with the lower area of Euston Road and contains many of its original buildings.

Pedder Street

A busy shopping street running parallel with Road.  Many of Morecambe's older buildings can be seen here as well as a variety of individual shops and businesses.  It is also where you can find the popular Chieftain Public House.
Nelson Street
A short thoroughfare connecting Queen Street and Pedder Street.  It contains many old buildings and the Lord Nelson Public House.
Morecambe Library
Morecambe library main entrance.
Morecambe reference library.

This is probably one of the most iconic buildings in Morecambe Town Centre.  The library opened in 1962 on a site which was previously occupied by the Gas Works.

Facilities include:entrance hall (sometimes you can find old books for sale), the main library, function room, offices, a children's library and the reference library (located on the first floor.

The town's previous library was located in a shop on Victoria Street. This opened in the 1920s but was much smaller than the present building. The old library is now occupied by Farrell and Heyworth Estate Agents.
